Cambodia’s Amazing Islands – inc the Luxury Escapes and the Secluded Wonders

Cambodia has a surprising number of islands off its southern coast offering beautiful waters, amazing beaches, nature walks, diving, and much more. Many of the islands still remain untouched while several have one or two accommodation bungalows, and some are growing into fully developed tourist getaways.

Here is an intro to the more popular islands, and how to get there, followed by a complete list of all the islands.

The Popular (and developed)

Koh Rong – កោះរ៉ុង

Koh Rong is the largest and most developed island off Cambodia’s cost and features 7 bays and 28 beaches. It’s popular with backpackers and flashpackers up for a party, but also offers something for those looking for a peaceful beachside island escape. There are 64+ accommodation options to choose from. Getting There: The ferry from Serendipity Beach at Sihanoukville takes around 45 mins.

Koh Rong Samloem – កោះរុងសន្លឹម

Near to Koh Rong and while substantially smaller it has even more accommodation options with 74+ different hostels, bungalows, and resorts. It is also popular with backpackers who enjoy the party life but you can easy find a quiet spot too. Getting There: The ferry from Serendipity Beach at Sihanoukville takes around 45 mins.

 
 

Secluded Islands (with accommodation)

Koh Ta Kiev – កោះតាគៀវ

A smaller island that is undeveloped at the moment while plans are underfoot for major resorts. There are four or so accommodation options on the island offering bungalows. You can enjoy the untouched beaches, snorkeling, hikes etc. Getting There: You can take a boat from Otres beach in Sihanoukville which takes around 20 mins in a speedboat or 50 minutes in a slower fishing boat.

Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) – កោះទន្សាយ

The smaller undeveloped island offers a unique escape and opportunity to completely unplug with no wifi (mobile internet is available) and limited electricity. You can hike around the island in a few hours and enjoy some of the untouched beaches. The only accommodation is Kim Vouch Iay Bungalows located on the beachfront. Getting There: Take the morning boat from Kep Pier which is about a 20 min ride to the island.

Koh Totang – កោះទទឹង

Koh Totang – a small secluded island inhabited by only a handful of people. You can enjoy the beaches, go snorkeling, and completely connect with nature as there are no cars or development, and only five bungalows by the beach (Nomads Land). Getting There: Take the boat operated by Nomads Land from Poi Yopon Pier which takes around 15 min to the island.

Koh Sdach – កោះស្ដេច

There are three accommodation options on the island. The island has two beaches and a couple of dive sites. Getting There: Take a boat from Poi Yopon Pier which takes around 15 min to the island.

Koh Kong – កោះកុងក្រៅ

A large and undeveloped island where you are likely to have the beaches all to yourself. There is one bungalow resort on the island, Koh Kong Island Resort. Getting There: A ferry service departs daily from Koh Kong City (near Koh Kong Bay Hotel) taking 2.5 hrs.

Koh Bong P’oun/Song Saa – កោះបងកោះប្អូន

Song Saa is a private island resort offering true world-class five-star luxury island escape. And it doesn’t come cheap at $1000US and up per night. Getting There: The resort has a speedboat which departs from Sihanoukville.

Koh Russei (Bamboo Island) – កោះឫស្សី

A scenic, small and undeveloped island with very beautiful beaches. It features the new luxury five-star resort Alila Villas Koh RusseyGetting There: Take a one-hour boat ride from Serendipity Beach at Sihanoukville.

Koh Chanloh/Kaoh Krobai – Krabey Island – កោះចន្លុះ/កោះក្របី

A tiny island which is home to the new luxury five-star Six Senses Resort offering a unique luxury island escape. Getting There: Six Senses offering a private speed boat that leaves from Sihanoukville taking around 20 minutes.

 
 

Islands for a Nature Escape

Koh Thmei – កោះថ្មី

The island is renowned for its birdlife and wildlife along with its pristine condition. Bungalows are available on the island at Koh Thmei Resort. Getting There: Take a one-hour boat ride from Koh Kchhang pier.

Koh Tang – កោះតាង

The island is known for its marine life with several diving spots including a wreck site. It also features several sandy beaches and rocky bays. There are bungalows available on the island. There are also discussions of a major resort development. Getting There: A speedboat from Siahoukville takes around one hour.
