Wat Samathi, an iconic temple in Kep is located just inside the National Park. Built at an altitude of 800 m, it is surrounded by thick forest dotted with banana and mango trees. As travellers approach the temple, a very long staircase leads them up to the courtyard. From there, a second staircase takes them up to the pagoda. Flanked on either side of the staircases are beautifully carved Naga serpents which are symbolic protectors of this pagoda.
Inside the pagoda are lovely artistic paintings reflective of Cambodian culture. At the very top of the temple, the terrace surrounding the pagoda offers breath-taking views of the seaside and the whole town. On a clear day, travellers can even see Vietnam in the distance as the border is just 40 km away. The sheer tranquillity and abundance of flora and fauna create a calm and fresh atmosphere.
