Angkor Borei Museum

A small museum housing interesting remnants from the Angkor Borei area. The museum may be locked but ask around as the caretaker is likely nearby and more than happy to open up. The museum also features some informative maps and overviews of archaeological work that’s taken place over the years, produced in tandem with the University of Manoa.

Some photos from our most recent visit in Feb 2024

Like all the regional museums, this one too houses some incredibly unique pieces, many are some of the oldest Buddhist art in the nation, including a Chakra wheel which is something quite special and informative, and several important inscriptions especially one from the post-Angkorian era found at Wat Romlok, several beautiful pieces from the 11th century in the Baphoun style, and much more. Also, there’s a large and informative section on ceramics with some fragments that may date back to 400-200 BC.

Around the museum, there are other fragments and heritage items such as a rice mill, ox carts, and shale plinths from temple sites. There are also the remnants of an old pagoda, Wat Chroy which appears to be dated to around the late 19th century (see inscription K. 26).

Some photos from 2022, it was closed due to the circumstances of that time, but I at least got to see the old colonial-style building. One can only hope that it finds a renewed purpose someday.
