Sihanoukville is going through a massive foreign investment-led revitalization that is seeing it transform from a sleepy backpackers beach getaway into becoming a home of casinos, modern hi-rise resorts, and five-star hotels.
Global hotel brands such as Novatel, Le Meridien, Marriott, and Wyndham all have new developments underway or near completion.
Along with hotels, there are reportedly 160 casino licenses approved for the area, and several large resorts and residential projects that have broken ground. Many of the residential projects aim to include large shopping malls with cinemas, restaurants, gymnasiums, wellness centers, and services designed for luxury-seeking clientele.
Of course, it’s no secret that most of the investment is from mainland China and that most of that development is geared to that market attracting retirees, and middle-class Chinese looking for more affordable apartments, investments, and lifestyle opportunities by selling their everyday apartment in China and moving into a luxury beachside resort with a large amount of change to start a business or retire on.
Some predict the future of Sihanoukville to look something like a cross between the Gold Coast of Australia and Macau with strong Chinese characteristics.
