Wat Andong Svay

Contemporary monastery. A shelter holds the base of an ancient sculpture.

Wat Preah Houch

A small pagoda housing several relics of an ancient site including a Buddhist chaitya/boundary marker and several pedestals.

Wat Tnaot Chum

Located on the bank of the Chinit river (Stoeng Chinit), the site is not only quite beautiful for its riverside setting but also for its stupa, an ancient relic, and a library built by the French in 1933. Nearby are the ancient temple sites of Tnaot Chum Khang Cheung Temple and Tnaot Chum Khang Lech … Read more

Tnaot Chum Khang Cheung Temple

Also recorded as Prasat Kambot/Kombot and Ta Hem. This fascinating small temple hidden away in the back blocks of a farming area features impressive carvings of a standing Buddha on its north, west, and south walls. The towering relief carvings are quite decayed but still clear in their outline. The carvings break a double cornice … Read more

Wat Baray

Monastery built on the site of an ancient temple. Several remnants are collected on the western side of the pagoda including an ornate pediment fragment, chaitya/bollard, a very decayed lintel and other pieces. The pediment fragment is the most artistically intersting, featuring a depiction of Brahma (sadly beheaded) flanked by two “angels”. The contemporary pagoda … Read more

Phum Prasat Temple (Kampong Thom)

Also recorded as Prasat Phoum and Prasat Pagoda (on Google Maps), it is a tall rectangular brick temple of the 8th century located on the grounds of a contemporary monastery. The ancient temple was restored in 2007 and still preserves much of the beautiful artwork of that time which is attributed to “Kampong Preah style” … Read more

Kuk Trapeang Kuk (Wat Trapeang Kong)

A contemporary monastery built on an ancient site. Only remnants of the ancient site were ever recorded, some of which can still be seen at the site including door steps (or moonstones) of the ancient temple. As of June 2022, a new pagoda is under construction with a lot of the sculptures being carved from … Read more

Preah Theat Preah Srei Temple (Tbong Khmum)

Preah Theat Preah Srei is one of my favourite sites in Cambodia featuring an unusual and grand pagoda that elegantly incorporated the ruins of the ancient temple that once existed at the site. Originally the site featured a brick temple complex, which as mentioned, has been consumed into the contemporary pagoda and monastery that was … Read more

Wat Krala

A contemporary monastery built upon a stone base featuring pedestals from an ancient temple as sema stone holders. Monks at the site believe the pagoda to be near one hundred years old and a new, very elaborate, pagoda is under construction (06/22).

Wat Chakto Lok

Also recorded as Chaktoluk Pagoda. It’s recorded as housing an ancient pedestal and bollard which I did not notice on the last visit nor was the pagoda open at the time.

Wat Kreul

Also recorded as Krerl Pagoda. A contemporary monastery located in Baray District

Wat Rokar Kandal

Located in the south of the city of Kratie, Wat Rokar (វត្តរការកណ្តាលចាស់) was built in the 18th century and, which is rare to see today, it features beautiful wooden pillars and internal frame with a tiled roof. It has been restored in recent times and functions as a local crafts center during tourist season. It’s … Read more
