Acrama, (asrama or ashram) is a type of hermitage or school for religious practice and retreat. During the reign of King Yacovarman (889–910 AD) it is recorded on more than one inscription that he constructed 100 of this acrama dedicated to Vishnuism, Shivaism, and Buddhism. At least four have been located in Angkor and around seventeen across the empire that also appear to be connected with the Royal Road network that also featured firehouses, basins, and hospital chapels. They are being studied by the Yaçodharâçrama Research Programme/APSARA.
