Known for its monumental Angkor-era style gate, Sangke Pagoda is a contemporary monastery and pagoda, located in the heart of central Battambang city just west of the river.
Historical Notes
This pagoda, named Wat-Song-Ke, is a stone chapel, very small and decorated with a facade quite similar to those of the most modest village churches; it rarely opens its wooden door, the guard of which is entrusted to monks, and its interior, filled with Buddhas large and small, or gifts offered to Buddha, is a veritable museum. I particularly admired a pair of elephant tusks measuring 2.25 meters in length. Their size does not exceed 20 centimeters; it is a distinctive character of the Asian elephant to possess long and thin tusks; those of the African elephant are, on the contrary, shorter, but more massive….
