Ta Prohm Kel

Ta Prohm Kel Temple (ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្មកិល) is located near the main gate to Angkor Wat. Ta Prohm Kel was one of the 102 ‘hospital chapels’ built across the empire under the rule of king Jayavarman VII who reigned from 1181–1218 AD. Note: Not to be confused with the much larger Ta Prohm Temple.

The sanctuary opened to the east and had false doors on the other three sides. It was preceded by a small sandstone terrace, likely an entrance pavilion, of which traces remain. It would have originally featured a surrounding wall with entrance gopura, and a basin in the northeast that still exists.

The decoration is in the style of the Bayon, with devatas and small roundels enclosing figures. A somasutra, a channel for draining lustral water out of the shrine, existed through the north wall of the sanctuary. An inscribed stele was found at the site (registered under K. 614) denoting the site as a “hospital chapel” otherwise known as an Arogyasala.

In 2022, the site has received restoration works which are ongoing.
