Statue of King Sisowath

The Statue of King Sisowath is located on the southern foothill of Wat Phnom Daun Penh in Phnom Penh. In front is the famous Giant Clock of Phnom Penh, and across the road to the southwest is the statue of Yeay Penh.

Background

Sisowath was king of Cambodia from 1904 to 1927. He was born in 1840 with the name Ang Sar. His father was King Ang Duong and his half-brothers were Prince Si Votha and King Norodom.

When he was born, Cambodia was ruled jointly by Siam and Vietnam. The royal family lived in Battambang under Siamese control. Like Norodom, Sisowath was educated in Bangkok. He returned to Cambodia in 1860 after his father Ang Duong died. In 1904 when his brother and king, Norodom died, Sisowath became king. He cooperated with the French, who rewarded him well until passing in 1927, and was succeeded by his son Sisowath Monivong.
