Located atop a large rise in central Krong Stung Treng, Phnom Theat Temple features the remnants of a 7th-century temple. According to historical notes, the site was a small brick temple enclosed by double outer walls featuring monumental gopura (gates). At the site today are several fascinating remnants including a mostly intact sandstone drain with a Makara spout, lintel fragments, one complete lintel, and several plinths.
Historical Notes
Phou Pha That. A third ruin at Sting Trêng is that of – Phou Pha That, or according to the Cambodian form, Phnom Preah Théat “the mountain of towers or sacred relics”, on a wooded mound, one league south-west of Mouong, not far from the river and the monument of Ba Chong. Two rectangular brick walls, one measuring 44 and 40 meters, the other 26 and 20, and decorated with monumental sandstone doors on all four sides, surrounded a tower or vaulted sanctuary, also in brick, that an interior partition divided into two compartments, one located behind Phou Pha That. A thick vegetation attacks and buries these heaps of bricks.
