Located at the edge of the Tonle Sap on the southeastern side of Siem Reap Province, Kampong Khleang village is a characterful, natural, and charming village where the bulk of the locals draw their livelihood from the great Tonle Sap lake and its tributaries.
Here, the homes are based along the water’s edge, rising up on stilts to accommodate for the seasonal variations in water level, and further out on the Tonle Sap itself, houses are built on pontoons, creating floating villages, it’s a spectacular sight. This floating village is not only an important fishing area but also a charismatic tourist destination.
This unusual sight, and the fascinating way of life of the local people, attracts a lot of tourists, especially during the rainy season. There are tour boats readily available for hire that can take you along the waterways admiring the stilted houses and visiting pagodas, also, heading out onto the Tonle Sap to visit the floating villages and the daily life. You can also hire smaller boats to weave through the flooded forest area and/or stroll the roads of the village and check out the market stalls.
