Wat Cheung Aek

A contemporary monastery and pagoda that was once an ancient site. A collection of ancient temple remains are gathered beside the pagoda including several moonstones (doorsteps), an almost complete lintel (but could not see a central idol figure), pedestals, and sema stones of a later era. An inscribed stele is recorded as being found here in the early 1900s and was registered under K. 426.

Inscription

K. 426 – Uncovered and translated by George Coedes in 1913, the ancient stele featured a blooming lotus flower depicting a trident and a Khmer inscription of 9 lines in writing from the 7th century A.D which Coedes described as

a royal order uniting the revenues of the god Siddhayatana of Cun Muh with those of the god Acaleçvara. A formula, analogous to that of the inscriptions of Kuha Lúon, Tuol An Tnot, Vat Tnot, Phum Komtien, threatens punishment for those who undermine the integrity of the foundation. The name of Siddhayatana “the perfect, miraculous temple” was borne by several shrines: one is mentioned in an inscription from Chantaboun; another, located in Pürvadiça, a district to the east of Angkor, is named in the stele of Sdók Kak Thom. The one whose site was in the vicinity of Vat Con Ek, and from which come, in addition to the stele, various pieces of pre-Angkorian art, bore the curious name cun muh bout du nez.

In recent times it was translated by Trent Walker

The decree of My High Lord:

That of My High Lord Siddhayatana in Cun Muh was pooled together with the property of My High Lord Sri Acalesvara, including slaves, cattle, buffalo, rice fields, harvested rice, gardens, lowlands, and crop fields. The people gave all these to the Lord.

Anyone who steals them from here, anyone who seizes people from here, anyone who infringes upon here, anyone who misuses what is listed here, anyone who petitions here, anyone who collects taxes here, anyone who takes cattle, carts, or boats from here, anyone who transgresses this decree-they shall be punished.
