Banteay Stoung Temple

Prasat Banteay Stoung (or Banteay Staong) features the remains of an ancient and small square brick temple. The temple has been complemented in later times with the addition of Buddhist carvings including a reclining Buddha and several remains of Buddha on naga statues. Above the doorway, an ancient frieze of worshipers was placed, so I want to suggest, if it’s not obvious, that this wall at least is a reconstruction but I am not sure when that took place. Sometime more recently a porch was added offering protection to the carving and remains.

Several pedestals can be seen at the site some excavated, some only partly, along with a remnant of a round decorated door column.

The site was originally surrounded by a moat and around 200 m south of the site are the remains of a vihara maybe? There are lots of pedestals that look like they would have held sema stones, some above ground and some still buried, atop a large mound. Nearby this a modern steel/vihara has been erected.

The site is accessed by a sandy trail directly south from the site originating between two houses on the sealed road running east-west.
