The train service that runs between Phnom Penh and the Thailand border at Poipet has recently re-opened and travelers now have an alternative to the regular buses between PP and Poipet. Poipet is the Cambodian border town where many travelers cross the border on their way to Thailand.
The Phnom Penh to Poipet train also stops at Pursat where it has a 30 min stop for people to get snacks etc, Battambong, Srei Sisophon, and finally Poipet. There are numerous other stops on the way at smaller towns/villages yet the train will only stop at those if there are customers.
The service runs daily, one time heading PP to Poipet direction and the next day from Poipet to PP. Currently (July 2019), there are still upgrade works in process so trains may not run every day and you need to check with the station prior to traveling or check online at Royal Railways website.
The journey time by train from Phnom Penh to Poipet is approx 11 hours and the ticket price is $7USD.

It is expected that by the end of the year train service will also connect from Poipet Station to Ban Klong Luk Border Station in Aranyaprathet Thailand from where you can travel onwards via train to Bangkok.
Many stations are still in stages of upgrading so please be patient.

The first train from Ban Khlong Luek leaves at 6:58 am and reaches Bangkok at 12:05pm while the second train leaves the border station at 1:53pm and reach the capital at 7:40 pm.
The first train from Bangkok leaves at 5:55am and reaches Ban Khlong Luek at 11:17am. The second one leaves the capital at 1:05pm and reaches Ban Khlong Luek at 5:27pm.
